NEW PROJECTS
NATIONAL OBJECTIVE: CIVIC BEAUTIFICATION
TRIMMING THE TRAILS
1. SOGC Members will assess the Community Crepe Myrtle and
Azalea Trails in the River Ridge area.
2. Members will devise a plan to revitalize, limb up, protect and nourish the
trees and plants of the trails.
3. After preparing a plan, members will contact and work with Jefferson
Parish and the River Ridge Community Association to complete the
project by scheduling workdays.
4. A circular will be created to educate the community on keeping up the
trees and plants along the trails. Information will be handed out on the
scheduled workdays.

NATIONAL OBJECTIVE: CIVIC BEAUTIFICATION
Civic Beautification and Maintenance:

Parish Landscaping & Tree Planting
1. Meet regularly with a Jefferson Parish Council member to discuss ideas
for beautifications projects.
2. Assist Parish Council in communication with vendors.
3. Help coordinate efforts for permitting approval for projects.
NATIONAL OBJECTIVE: CIVIC BEAUTIFICATION
1. SOGC members will work with Jefferson Parish officials, club members
and local artists to beautify the streetscape of the River Ridge community
(70123 Zip Code) by transforming generic signalized intersections/utility
boxes into works of art.
2. Members will choose box locations for conversion, artist selection and
design.
3. Design will be submitted to parish officials for approval.
4. Funds from the SOGC Budget will be used for this project.
NATIONAL OBJECTIVE: CONSERVATION
1. SOGC members participate in Jefferson Parish Christmas
Tree Marsh Restoration Project by recycling their Christmas
trees during the first two weeks of January, 2024.
2. Members will plant milkweed and other native plants annually
to attract, feed and shelter butterflies.
NATIONAL OBJECTIVE: EDUCATION
SOGC members will give programs and presentations
to area garden clubs throughout the year. Members assist
with the annual New Orleans Orchid Society Show, Lakeside Mall,
3301 Veterans, Metairie, Date and Time TBA
NATIONAL OBJECTIVE: GARDEN THERAPY
SOGC members work with senior citizen residents of St. Francis
Villa Assisted Living. They will assist residents in planting spring
annuals. Residents will also be provided with horticultural
information about their plants. SOGC members will contribute
plants for this project. Funds from the SOGC Budget will be used
for additional materials.

NATIONAL OBJECTIVE: LANDSCAPE DESIGN
Community Garden Award,
Monthly judging of local landscapes and an award presentation
to a non-member River Ridge home garden for outstanding
landscape design. The award is given to foster public awareness
of landscape design.
NATIONAL OBJECTIVE: LITTER CONTROL
Litter Cleanup of Community Flowerbeds,
SOGC members work monthly in teams removing
litter from public area flower beds to promote
environmental awareness.

Love The Boot Event
1. Cooperate with Keep Louisiana Beautiful - the Love the Boot statewide
event is an initiative to create and promote a cleanup and beautification
event in our neighborhood.
2. Choose a date and location, April 20-28, 2024.
3. Enlist volunteers for event.
NATIONAL OBJECTIVE: PHILANTHROPY
1. SOGC Members contribute to:
a. JPCGC, Inc., Arbor Day Fund - $10.00
b. JPCGC, Inc., Philanthropic Fund - $10.00
c. JPCGC, Inc., Scholarship Fund - $10.00
d. New Orleans City Park Botanical Gardens- $50.00
2. Sunshine,
Monetary amounts for holiday dinners and gifts are
collected and donated to needy families of students of
Hazel Park Elementary, $1,500.00 yr. (estimate)
3. Neil Christopher Education Grant,
A SOGC member funds a $500.00 donation to the Neil
Christopher Education Grant. The recipient is selected,
based on certain criteria, by LGCF, Inc., Scholarship Program.
NATIONAL OBJECTIVE: SCHOOL GARDENS
SOGC members will work with Hazel Park students and outside
contributors in maintaining the school’s front entrance Sculpture
Garden, Hazel Park-Hilda Knoff Elementary School,
8809 Jefferson Hwy.
NATIONAL OBJECTIVE: TREE PLANTING
1. SOGC Arbor Day Ceremony,
A tree will be planted on Sauve Road in River Ridge, LA,

A tree will be planted in honor of Arbor Day,

SOGC members work with students at least five times
during the school year to foster basic environmental,
conservation, horticultural and floral design principles.

SCARECROW CONTEST
SOGC members create a scarecrow for entry into City Park’s Scarecrow
Contest in support of the Community Education Project at
City Park’s Scarecrow Trail, Oct. 3-4, 2023 at the City Park Botanical
Gardens, NOLA
CELEBRATION IN THE OAKS
1. SOGC members will decorate the exterior of City Park’s historic Carousel
for Celebration in the Oaks at the Botanical Gardens, City Park.

2. SOGC members will design a Mr. Bingle Wreath for placement in City

1. SOGC members will make two large urn floral arrangements to be placed at
the entrance of the grand staircase in the New Orleans
Museum of Art, City Park, NOLA,
September 11, 2023 and April 8, 2024
2. " Art in Bloom,” SOGC members will make an original floral design which
will artistically reflect the designated artwork. New Orleans Museum of Art,
City Park, NOLA, March 13-17, 2024
